To start a vine or forsythia bush or even a rose bush with a cutting. In spring or summer, cut a 6" piece of the vine or bush. Dont cut straight, cut stem at an angle. Strip off the lower leaves, leaving the top 4 leaves. Plant in the ground about 3" deep. Water well, press the soil down firmly around your cutting and cover with an upside down quart jar. Twist the jar into the ground a little to provide stability. You should see moisture form within the jar. Check daily. When you no longer see moisture, pour water around the jar, be sure it gets to the roots. Be sure your cutting doesn't touch the jar. Leave the jar until you can see the plant is beginning to grow which means it is taking root. Don't plant in direct sunlight or the jar may entrap too much heat and kill your cutting. You can transplant after a while, but I like to start them in the place I want it to grow and remain. For a forsythia, make sure to plant in a spot where it can grow very large; not near other plants, trees, or bushes. When you remove the jar, place rocks or bricks around the newly rooting plant so you won't accidentally mow it down!

One of the pleasures of gardening is the array of different colors that an ornamental flower or perennial garden provides over the course of each year. As you plan for your next planting project, think about your approach to color. Many green thumbs succumb to the temptation to plant a variety of colors that will be blooming at any one time. Consider simplifying your color scheme so you will have large groupings of the same color. One color covering an area is often more effective and dramatic than a range of colors.

Simplicity in color will often make a space feel larger than it actually is. Large masses of color give an elegant and sophisticated feel to a place. The effect can be quieting and calming, which is something that many homeowners look for in flower and perennial gardens.

To keep insects from invading your vegetable garden, plant a full row of summer-blooming marigolds around all four sides of your garden. Beetles and other insects hate the smell and the flowers have something in them that runs them off!

Wired Wheeled Weed Wackers

Someone should design a new type of weed whacker. The invention would work like this: you unwind the spool of wire it's connected to, laying it close to the edges you want trimmed, and then let the wheeled whacker follow the wire back to its starting point, taking up the slack and trimming the grass as it goes.

A living native plant delivers beauty in a garden many times over exotic cut flowers that die 2 days later. They also feed native fauna.

Tea has nutrients like iron that are good for plants so why not biodegradable tea bags you could put in your garden instead of throwing them away?

Mint is easy to grow. But watch out... it can take over a garden by spreading its roots. Better to keep it in a pot.
